The do’s and don’ts of

Must read

A gentleman is thought to be a man whose conduct conforms to a high standard of propriety. So, how do you dress like a gentleman?  In order to dress like a gentleman, there are some do’s and don’ts you should follow.

The do’s for dressing like a gentleman

What are the dos for dressing like a gentleman?

  • Dress in clothes that actually fit you

Ensure that your clothes fit you perfectly because in reality, how your clothes fit your body, is more important than the choice of clothes themselves.

We may not all be able to afford a private tailor to fit our suits, shirt and trousers for us, but we can pop into our local high-street tailor for some advice. What’s great is that once you know your measurements, you can make sure you are buying the right size.

  • Wear your shirt correctly

There’s a bit more to wearing men’s shirts correctly than just purchasing the right size, so make a careful note. First things first, the tips of the collar need to sit against the body of the shirt. As well as this, the sleeve cuff should cover the wrist reaching the bottom of the thumb.

Remember that if a shirt has a curved hem then it has been designed to be tucked in, so don’t leave it untucked!

  • Quality over quantity

Create a capsule wardrobe for yourself, filled with the basics you need, from high-quality clothes that will last a long time. Good quality clothing not only looks better but feels better to wear.

Focus on building a wardrobe of good-quality shirts, trousers and jeans that can be mixed and matched for any occasion.

The don’ts for dressing like a gentleman

What are the don’ts of dressing like a gentleman?

  • Don’t let your suit wear you

On top of making sure you are wearing a suit that fits your body shape, you shouldn’t have your pockets filled with unnecessary items. If you want to dress like a gentleman, then bulky pockets will not help.

Perhaps try storing your mobile phone in your breast pocket to be more discrete, as well as your keys, to avoid the bulky pocket look.  The less bulk you carry around in your pockets, the more sleek you will look.

  • Avoid jumping on every new trend

Not all trends will suit your personal style, which is why it is important to not jump on every new trend that emerges. Trends should never dictate your wardrobe, what is more important is that you build a capsule wardrobe that you can rely on all year round.

  • Don’t let your outfit dictate you

As important as clothing can feel, your outfit shouldn’t take over your personality and should certainly not consume you. Try not to overthink your outfit because at the end of the day, you simply need to dress in a way that makes you feel good when you look in the mirror.

Final Thoughts

Dressing like a gentleman isn’t just about spending large amounts of money on expensive items, it’s all about how you wear your choice of clothing. Be confident in your dress sense and trust that you know how to put an outfit together.
