Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) of Mumbai is considered to be one of India’s historical heritage sites. CST is also the most organized railway station in India, currently included in the UNESCO World Heritage Heritage.

This railway station, built to commemorate the completion of the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria, was named Victoria Terminus. It was launched on 20 June 1887. The station was renamed Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in 1996 by Union Railway Minister Suresh Kalmadi.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), made from Italian marble and polished Indian blue stone, shows a masterful confluence of Indian and British architect style. A lion (symbol of Britain) and cheetah (symbol of India) are seen at every gate here. Also, a statue of Queen Victoria was also installed here, which was removed after independence.

Built in Victorian Gothic style, the specialty of this terminal is its special look and the huge infrastructure here. At present, there are 18 railway platforms out of which 11 are used for long distance trains and 7 for local trains.

Earlier, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus was known as ‘Victoria Terminus’.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus has short names as VT, or CST.

It is one of the busy stations in India.

According to statistics, this station is the most photographed monument in India after the Taj Mahal.

On 2 July 2004, the station was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.

Gothic style construction

The construction of the Victoria Terminus building cost Rs 16.13 lakhs at that time.

This building has been constructed in Gothic style keeping in mind the Indian architecture. It is balanced in the shape of the English letter ‘C’ and is planned in the east and west direction.

The main attraction of this building is its central dome, on top of which a statue of growth 16 feet 6 inches has a statue.

30 lakh passengers travel every day

At that time, 6 platforms were constructed in this railway station, which cost 10.4 lakhs.

In the year 1929, the number of platforms here increased to 13. Currently there are a total of 18 platforms.

– More than 30 lakh passengers travel here everyday. Also CST is the headquarters of the Central Railway, India.
