DRS Full Form is – Decision Review System

Decision Review System or DRS is mostly used in Cricket and with the help of the DRS rule any team can challenge the umpire’s decision. But, what is this rule and with the help of this technology, this decision review system is used.

What is decision review system

If the umpire gives out the batsman playing in the field and that player feels that the decision taken by the umpire is wrong. So in such a situation, that player can go against the umpire’s decision with the help of this rule. The player may ask the third umpire to consider the decision. At the same time, the third umpire, with the help of the decision review system, reviews the decision of the first umpire. If during review the third umpire feels that the player is not out. So in such a situation the third umpire changes the verdict. At the same time, if the decision of the first umpire is found to be correct during the review, then their decision is upheld. Similarly, if the bowler feels that the batsman is out and the umpire has not given him out, then he can ask for a review from the third umpire with the help of the decision review system.

How Many Times DRS Can Be Used In Cricket

Each team can use the decision review system twice in a test match. At the same time, the number of usage of the decision review system in one-day matches and T20 matches has been kept only one.

When was this review used

This rule was first used in the year 2008. This rule was first tested in a match between India and Sri Lanka team. At the same time, after working this rule properly, from the year 2009, the International Cricket Council (ICC) had implemented these rules in cricket. After which this rule was used in every match. Whereas in a one-day match, this rule was introduced from the year 2011.

Now DRS will be used in T20 (DRS in t20 cricket)

The International Cricket Council has implemented the use of the Decision Review System in T20 from the year 2017. After this, it will now be mandatory to use this rule in every T20 International match. Not only this, it has become mandatory to use ball-tracking and ultra edge-detection technology in the ball also in T20.

Decision review system technology

The third umpire has to resort to replay to reach any decision. By replicating, the umpire sees that the decision of the umpire in the field is correct or not. At the same time, three types of technologies are used in the decision review system. With the help of these techniques, the third umpire makes his decision. Which are the techniques, the information about it is given below.

Hawkeye cricket technology

This technique is used when a batsman is given LBW out by the umpire. On the other hand, if the batsman feels the umpire’s decision is wrong, then he uses this rule. After which, with the help of Hawk-Eye, the third umpire sees whether the ball could have been hit in the wicket after hitting the pad.

Hotspot technology in cricket

This technique uses the help of an infra-red imaging system. In this technique, the place where the ball collides becomes white. While the rest of the picture remains black. At the same time, using this technique, it is used to know whether the ball is attached to the batsman’s pad or bat.

Snickometer in cricket

In this technique, it is decided to listen to the sound of the ball whether the ball is in the batsman’s bat or pad. If the ball is hit by a bat or pad, then the sound is heard and the decision is taken with the help of voice. Microphones are used in this technique.

Changes in the Decision Review System (New DRS Rules Cricket)

Umpire’s call rule changed

Before the changes made in the Decision Review System, it is important to know what is called ‘Umpire Call’. In fact, when the third umpire is unable to make it clear that the player was out or not under the decision review system, in such a situation the third umpire accepts the decision given by the on-field umpire. Which is called the umpire call. At the same time, according to the old rule, if the umpire call was taken, then in such a situation a review of the team would have been wasted. At the same time, this rule has been changed in the year 2017. According to the change, if the third umpire decides to call the umpire in LBW, then in such a situation the review of the team taking the review will not be wasted.

How many reviews do you get in a test match?

In a Test match, any team can use the decision review system only twice during 80 overs. At the same time, if the limit of taking review of a team is over, then that team was again given two reviews after 80 overs. But recently, this rule of reviewing after 80 overs has been removed.

Rules related to decision review system (DRS or decision review system rules in cricket)
