The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF; English International Association of Athletics Federations; IAAF, until 2001 – International Amateur Athletics Federation; IAAF) is the world governing body in athletics. It was founded in 1912 at the first convention in Stockholm, Sweden.
Changed its name in 2001 “to reflect the current status of athletics as a sport that supports its professionals with revenues from marketing programs and the sale of television rights.”
The IAAF is established for an unlimited period of time with the legal status of an association according to Monaco’s laws.
There are currently 213 countries in the IAAF (4 more than FIFA and 21 more than the UN). In 1933, the organization’s headquarters was located in Monaco, where it is located to this day.
