Images created using computer graphics are referred to as CGI. They may be static or movable, two-dimensional or three-dimensional, with the latter being the most common.
Today CGI is associated primarily with cinema and special effects. And this is understandable: filmmakers willingly reveal the secrets of making blockbusters. Remember the hype surrounding the “War of Infinity” – the share of computer graphics there is simply ethereal.
Recently, the special effects team shared a video showing how the effects are applied to the footage. And the fight of Iron Man and Spider against Calla Obsidian, by the way, is pure CGI.
In-game graphics are usually not considered CGI, although technically, it is nothing more than a frame-by-frame rendering of images that occurs in real-time. However, the video inside the game can be considered a CGI product, while the game’s graphics are not.
What is computer graphics used for in advertising?
As elsewhere, CGI in advertising serves two purposes: to make the picture beautiful and to show anything however you want. Imagine a typical ’90s action movie-style ad for men’s deodorant. The muscular macho saves the world for twenty seconds, dodging cruise missiles. The helicopter explodes in the frame, and the hero’s shirt is dry and does not smell at all. All of this would have been impossible to show on screen without CGI.
And it’s not just about videos. In fact, all the beautiful pictures around us are created with the help of CGI – and where to use it, if not in advertising? Promotional pages, videos on TV, printing, outdoor advertising and everything else are incomplete without computer graphics.
Three-dimensional graphics editors are used to creating CGIs. Usually, large companies like Disney have their own professional programs, but this does not mean that the technology for creating CGI is not available in the day-to-day environment.
The most popular programs used to create CGI are Autodesk Maya, Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Houdini and Luxology Modo. However, just because they are available to everyone does not mean that they are worse. Large film companies sometimes use them to create different special effects.
Previously, CGI was not used universally, and in some cases, it was a kind of bad manners. If now the film academics of the prestigious Oscar can give a golden statuette to the most realistic-depicted forest inhabitants from the Jungle Book by John Favreau, then back in the 80s, it was believed that computer effects made the life of filmmakers too easy. The most striking example is the cult movie “Tron” from 1982, the first film that consists entirely of special effects. The film became a cult favourite among science fiction fans; the graphics were considered a breakthrough for their time. But the film was never nominated for an Oscar for visual effects because it seemed to film academics that the authors were cheating by using computer graphics.
However, now CGI has evolved to such an extent that very often, the effects are too realistic, and the audience is completely unaware of their presence. Because computer graphics have become relatively cheap in recent years, it is often easier to use CGI rather than hiring actors, applying makeup or creating entire sets. Many films generally consist almost entirely of special effects, such as Deadpool, where even the characters’ faces are modelled on a computer.
