RADAR represents Radio Detection and Ranging System. It is essentially an electromagnetic framework that is utilized to discover the exact location of an object and also the distance of that object from where the RADAR is set. RADAR works by transmitting energy in space and checking the reverberation or reflected sign from objects. It works in the UHF and microwave range.

What Does RADAR Stand For?

The radar emits a short radio pulse of very high power into space, called a probe pulse. The probing pulse is focused in a specific direction using a directional antenna and propagates through space at the speed of light.

If an obstacle arises in the path of propagation of the sounding pulse, for example, an airplane, then part of the pulse energy will be reflected in all directions. Some, very small part of it will also be reflected in the opposite direction, that is, in the direction of the radar antenna. Here it can be accepted and used for further processing. The range to the target can be measured using an ordinary oscilloscope. The principle of such a measurement is explained in Figure 1. The luminous point on the oscillogram moves synchronously with the probe pulse, leaving a trace. The movement of the point begins simultaneously with the emission of a probe pulse into space. At the moment when the antenna receives the signal reflected from the target, a pulse appears on the oscilloscope screen. The time delay between two pulses, probing and received, is proportional to the range to the target.

Since the propagation of radio waves occurs at a constant known speed (equal to the speed of light, c0), the range can be determined by the delay time of the received signal relative to the probing one. The measured range from the radar to the target is called the slant range of the target. The slant range of a target is the straight-line (line-of-sight) distance from the radar antenna to the irradiated object. While the horizontal range (the projection of the slant range onto the earth’s surface) requires information about the flight altitude or the target elevation angle for calculation. Since when a target is detected, an electromagnetic wave travels a path to the target and back, the signal travel time is divided by two, thus we determine the time the pulse moves in one direction.
