LCD Full Form is – Liquid Crystal Display
LCD abbreviation for Liquid crystal display (LCD) is a flat panel display based on liquid crystals and devices based on such a display (monitors, televisions). LCDs are used in laptops, mobile phones, calculators, digital cameras, tablets, electronic watches, players, navigators, and other devices. An example of an LCD monitor is shown on the right.
Liquid crystals were discovered as early as the late 19th century, but the first liquid crystal display devices did not appear until the late sixties of the 20th century. In the eighties, the first attempts were made to use LCD screens in computers. Monochrome LCD monitors were very inferior in image quality to CRT-based screens. But with the development of progress, new technologies have been developed to produce LCD monitors using innovative materials. New substances with the properties of liquid crystals have greatly improved the characteristics of LCDs.
Liquid Crystal (liquid crystals) are organic substances. When exposed to an electric voltage, crystals can change the intensity of the light transmitted through them.
The LCD matrix is designed to create a grid of liquid crystals between two glass or plastic plates. LC crystals, in turn, are parallel to each other. And this allows light to penetrate the panel. When an electrical signal comes to the matrix, the crystals begin to change their position, and they block the light passing through them.

LCD stands for – Liquid Crystal Display
LCD monitor technology is one of the most promising today. Liquid crystals are a mixture of certain substances that are in a crystalline and liquid state at the same time. As a liquid, this mixture is fluid and fills the space, and as a crystal, it is formed from molecules that are located with a clear structure.
The design of almost all LCD displays is identical. The method of any LCD display includes the following components:
- LCD matrix;
- Light source;
- Contact harness;
- Housing.
Liquid crystals used in LCD screens are made up of rod-shaped molecules that are parallel to each other. Since they are liquid, they can “flow,” changing their spatial orientation depending on the arrival of an electric voltage.
The main structural element of any LCD display is a pixel, which consists of subpixels (three cells). Each subpixel consists of liquid crystals arranged in layers, forming a spiral of internal molecules. Two electrodes clamp this crystal structure and colored plates coated with the polarizing film. Red plates are in the first cell; green plates are in the second; blue plates are in the third.
As you know, LCDs took the honorable first place in the market, replacing the old CRT monitors. In the days when “pot-bellied boxes” were on every desktop, the choice of the monitor was severely limited. And when purchasing computer equipment, most people took the first display they saw on the counter. Because they practically did not differ from each other. “Tubular” monitors had several serious problems, including those related to the user’s health. After all, the flickering of the screen had a negative effect on the eyes. And people who constantly work at the computer regularly spoil their eyesight.
Problems like this and the imposing size of CRT displays have forced manufacturers to improve production technologies continually. And as a result, LCD screens were born. The development turned out to be so successful that over time LCDs became the basis for developing more and more technologies in monitor building.
How Does a LCD work?
Cyanophenyls, which are liquids with crystalline characteristics, are employed in the manufacture of LCD panels. LCD displays work based on crystalline molecules’ polarisation characteristics, which convey a light component with an electric magnetic induction vector in a parallel optical plane of the polaroid.
As for any other light spectra, their crystals do not transmit. Cyanophenyl is a light filter that transmits only one light spectrum (one of the primary colors). This effect is called “light polarization”.
Polarization control became possible by changing the arrangement of long liquid crystal molecules depending on the electric magnetic field. The change in the shape and location of cyenophenyls depends on the force with which the electromagnetic field acts on them. There is a change in the angles of refraction of light and polarization.
These are the fundamental properties that reveal how an LCD monitor works. A change in the strength of the electromagnetic field of liquid molecules forces the liquid crystal molecules to change their position, due to which an image is formed.
What are the types of LCD?
The Matrix is an essential part of the LCD monitor, which completely determines the quality of its image.
Modern monitors have three main types of matrix:
TN film (Twisted Nematic film), or simply TN is the oldest and cheapest type of matrix in production, characterized by minimal response time, relatively modest color transmission, small viewing angles with noticeable distortion of colors when changing the angle of observation (especially vertically), as well as low contrast.
Technology does not stand still and flaws as images of modern TN matrix can be detected only by specifically searching for them.
LCD monitors with TN-type matrix are well suited for internet, office applications (mostly text), for dynamic 3D games (shooters, simulators).
You can watch them and movies, but only alone – the group viewing will affect limited viewing angles.
IPS (In-Plane Switching) matrixes are the best color transmission, provide average (by modern standards) contrast, viewing angles over 170 degrees (virtually without visible distortion of colors while reducing the angle of observation, both horizontally and vertically), while the reaction time of pixels they leave much to be desired.
However, at present, the classic IPS-type matrix on the market is almost non-existent, they have been replaced by S-IPS matrix with a relatively short reaction time, using Overdrive technology, if inferior to this parameter matrix type TN,then the smallest.
Thus, the S-IPS matrix has only one drawback – a fairly high, not always justified, price.
On this basis, monitors with S-IPS matrix are positioned mainly for professional work with graphics or as prestigious models for home use.
Matrixes such as zVA (MVA – Multi-domain Vertical Alignment, PVA – Patterned Vertical Alignment and their varieties) are characterized by high contrast, good enough color transmission, wide viewing angles (no worse than the S-IPS),but at a price more expensive than TN.
